A Letter to Self
Life drawing has always been my passion. I love the beauty and imperfections of the human body and since 2005 it has been the source of all my work.
At the start of lockdown in 2020, all life drawing classes stopped and I felt bereft. I didn't realise how difficult it would be to not go out to life drawing every week. It was then that I decided to draw myself. During my creative life I have always done self-portraits but this felt like a mission. I thought about Frida Khalo and her forced seclusion and reasoned, I am my own best model. I did an A2 drawing a day for forty days, using pencil, charcoal, watercolour, pastels, oil pastels, gouache and inks. This collection is the result of that period of seclusion.

Statement
I work in mixed print media; screen-printing, relief printing, collagraph, chine colle, and mono-prints, although drawing is at the heart of my work. Drawing as a way of knowing, as a mode of enquiry and as a visual language. Life drawing is the source of all my print work and is ongoing. It is the most important part of my art. I love the idea of the repetition of images and use it throughout much of my work. Working in this medium, I have found a new and vibrant palette, which has spilled over into my long-standing interest in life painting, and has tapped into a deeply buried childhood enjoyment of colour.
